The 2-year-old child left in the care of Yenci Elizabeth Lopez - a long-term daycare provider for the family of her victim - was left in a “scalding hot bath” at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5 in Hempstead, according to Nassau County Police investigators.

Investigators said that the child was in the bath for several minutes and left unattended, though he was screaming while in the bath.

It is further alleged that Lopez, who is reportedly related to her victim, then left the Hempstead home without providing care for the child, who suffered burns on approximately 20 percent of his body. The child was transported to a local burn unit for treatment of second-degree burns.

Lopez was later taken into custody without incident.

Police said that Lopez was charged with reckless assault of a child by a child daycare provider and endangering the welfare of a child. She was scheduled to be arraigned on the charges in First District Court in Hempstead on Monday, Jan. 6 to respond to the charges.
